Il passato che rivive
A past that relives

“The Gaetano Donizétti Theatre of Bellagio”

The Beretta family, originating from Bergamo, constructed in Bellagio in the first part of the nineteenth century a small theatre for lyric opera dedicating it to Gaetano Donizetti (1797 – 1848), their illustrious co-citizen. When the Beretta family left Bellagio in 1935, this little jewel of architecture was however, for some incredible reason, closed and demolished. Further to this damage, we have also suffered something ridiculous: of the Theatre “G.Donizétti” (called also Teatro “Beretta”) it appears, in fact, that there have not been preserved even a photographic record. The building which contained the theatre, erected at the start of the road which leads from the Borgo of Bellagio to Punta Spartivento, can in fact only be seen in certain panoramic photographs of the centre of town but there do not seem to be any photographs of the inside of the theatre. Our fruitless search on our territory has prompted us to ask for the help of photographic collectors in the entire world. Who knows that perhaps someone somewhere possesses a photo of this little theatre of ours that now survives only in the memories (and in the designs) of our old people … a find of this kind would be, not only for us of the Afb, but for all the inhabitants of Bellagio, an inestimable souvenir of the past.
